Tasmania's most fertile dairying and vegetable-growing area is found around the north-west town of Smithton on the banks of the Duck River, in what is called the Circular Head region. It was the first European settlement in the north-west and settlers reclaimed the blackwood swamps to produce an economy based on farming, blackwood timber and fishing.
In the town, there is a lookout tower on Tier Hill, for great views over the town and river. The park overlooking the mouth of the Duck River makes an ideal spot for a picnic or some fishing. Duck River and Duck Bay are popular for fishing and boating.
There are several forest reserves in the area, offering a wide range of recreational opportunities. There are bushwalks suitable to all levels of fitness and ability. At Wombat Tarn, there is a picnic area and children's playground.
Lacrum Dairy Farm has milking demonstrations and cheese tastings during summer and autumn. Gunns Timber Mill is the largest hardwood mill in Australia. It is open by arrangement. Green thumbs will enjoy a visit to Allendale Gardens on the road to Edith Creek, a privately owned botanical garden with a unique rainforest walk.
At Dismal Swamp, you can visit the area's unique blackwood swamp and gain an understanding of this habitat at the Visitors Centre.
Smithton is the gateway to the scenic Arthur's River region on Tasmania's west coast. Sumac Lookout provides great views over the river and the surrounding forest. There are boat tours along the river except in the winter months.
